University of Washington Campus Landscape Framework

The University of Washington Campus Landscape Framework (CLF) gives voice to a landscape that is universally loved but often taken for granted. Carved out of the forest that once blanketed Seattle, the UW campus is composed of a series of cleared and wooded spaces, ranging in scale and character.

Directly inspired by this mosaic of richly varied landscape types, the Campus Landscape Framework was produced through an unorthodox approach that identified, analyzed, and explored specific areas as case studies to illustrate campus challenges and inform landscape principles.

The result is twofold: a set of recommendations on how UW should focus its attention and future building projects, as well as a tool kit—both practical and visionary—for campus preservation and maintenance.

By combining input from regional and UW communities with a detailed understanding of the campus systems, the CLF was able to outline specific long- and short-term strategies for nurturing a socially and ecologically healthy environment.
