Piers Park 3
The MVVA team is working with The Trustees of Reservations to reimagine the Boston waterfront, especially in areas where sea level rise poses a threat to residents. Piers Park 3 presents a remarkable opportunity to preserve open space within the city for the public’s benefit. At the same time, it will address the pressing need for a more resilient coastline not only in East Boston, but along the entire harbor.

A robust and bilingual community outreach effort in East Boston led MVVA to focus on resilience and immersive natural environments at Piers Park 3. More than 1,000 people responded to community surveys and participated in outreach events in the early stages of design.

For Piers Park 3 to become a destination landscape with an outsized impact, it needs to complement phases 1 and 2 of Piers Park and yet also offer something entirely new.

A new landform jutting out into the harbor will provide opportunities for resilient coastlines, habitat restoration, and public harbor access. Transitional habitats will be established in the landform’s marshy edges, which will also help to buffer the city from flooding in storms.
